"Any idea when you're chatting with the Haim sisters?" an inquiry reads. "I wanted to ask if I can be their extra sister."

There's just one problem: I also desires to be Haim's additional sibling. Furthermore, we are far from alone. A host of celebrated admirers have also begged for the position.

One thing is obvious an irresistible appeal is going on. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana started their musical journey playing gigs at local delicatessens with their parents. Now they're repeated Grammy hopefuls.

In the tradition of the greatest ensembles, they're a inseparable gang. Their videos repeatedly depict them marching in unison down the streets of Los Angeles. On stage, they jam with such pure happiness you find yourself thinking, "I want to be a piece of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that fans came up to us and said, 'After your show, I picked up a drum kit'," states Alana, the youngest of the sisters. "That is the greatest honor. It is a prize in itself. We've done our job if we can motivate others to start a band."

Grammy Nod

The trio have called into a break, where they're taking a pause after an extensive tour in support of their latest album, I Quit.

They're right now reeling from the news it's been shortlisted for Best Rock Album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the very first all-woman band ever in contention for the prize.

"I follow the announcements every year, so it almost feels like The Truman Show when your name is announced," says Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this correctly or am I hallucinating'?"

The weight of the accolade is deeply felt by the band.

"We truly set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a major step," says Alana. "Yet we're just appreciative for the female artists that inspired us."

Emotional Upheaval and Laughter

The record came out of a phase of emotional upheaval. All three sisters ended up single, and the music inhabits that odd transitional period where you're glad to be free, but not quite ready to move on.

The themes detail breakups and farewells. The sisters seek love, but not the specific love they've got. You can hear them working out in the moment who they aspire to be.

"I love summary, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a slogan. You have to consciously practice shutting out the noise and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Development of Sound

That newfound resilience demanded a different sonic direction – more unpolished and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that began with the drum sound.

"Percussion is such a nuanced thing, and I am so passionate about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our book," quips Alana. "I always say, our albums won't commence until we find the perfect drum sound."

Stories and Shared Humor

The trio's honesty fueled the album's rollout, where the sisters shared some of their dating tales.

One man broke up with Este over a medical concern. Alana told a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"When you're going through these setbacks, you just feel like there's only darkness," says Alana. "Therefore to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you even crazier stories, it's incredible."

An Assured Future

One can easily sense a evolution in the band. These days, Haim are more certain of their place in the industry.

They're major draws, with chart-topping albums and an international fan base.

But Haim will consistently be their primary focus.

"Me and my siblings have been making music since I was little," concludes Alana. "There is no alternative that we were meant to do. And I'm really thankful we've gotten here and we're still going strong."
