Close to 25,000 Experiencing Power in Queensland and Victoria Following Severe Weather Systems

Approximately twenty-five thousand homes in southeastern Queensland woke up experiencing outages on Monday morning after severe thunderstorms impacted the state, generating wind gusts hitting over 100 km/h.

Large Frozen Precipitation and Extensive Damage

Homeowners observed substantial frozen pellets reaching sizes of 7 centimeters in some areas. Weather authorities verified that multiple regions across Queensland had been hit with substantial ice precipitation.

Emergency crews were working to restore energy supply throughout the impacted areas, with approximately seventy teams working to address the numerous electricity disruptions.

Victoria's Storm Challenges

At the same time, nearly 1,000 households in Victoria also encountered electricity disruptions after the metropolitan area saw its most precipitation in a year and a half.

Rescue organizations handled over five hundred calls for help across the state, mainly for building damage but also for collapsed vegetation and flooding.

Hardest Hit Areas

  • Werribee region - saw considerable weather impact
  • Hoppers Crossing suburb - numerous emergency calls
  • Wyndham - 179 emergency requests

At one point on the previous day, in excess of 28,000 power users in Victoria were without power.

Meteorological Predictions

Damp conditions were forecast to persist along significant areas of Queensland's east this next several days as a low-pressure trough continued to draw in moisture against the coastal areas.

Tomorrow was expected to become the heaviest precipitation period, with persistent storm activity anticipated across various areas of both areas.

Safety Concern

Public health experts warned that there was an increased chance of epidemic thunderstorm asthma across the countryside regions, specifically given the current weather patterns.

This caution comes after historical occurrences where analogous circumstances led to major medical consequences in the region.
