Users Coming Off Slimming Medications Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that people who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"People buying these medications should be informed of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Approaches

The study, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Fast Regain

Doctors propose the mechanism of the drugs explains the amplified rebound.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Condition?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have stopped the jabs report a intense return of cravings.

"I experienced something activating and you become ravenous," described one woman.

The struggle is compounded if individuals have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss hinges on combined behavioural support.
